Data coming out of the New Jersey online gambling market is further bearing this out.
The Center for Gambling Studies at Rutgers University is tasked with providing the state with an annual report on online gambling, and one of the focuses of the report is the responsible gaming features offered at licensed online gambling sites.

Here’s what the researchers — Lia Nower, J.D., Ph.D., Kyle Caler, MSW, ABD, and Rongjin Guan, Ph.D. — found on this front after looking through the data.
Self-exclusion most selected RG feature for online gamblers
According to the report, 13,422 (roughly 14 percent) of all online gamblers at licensed New Jersey websites signed up for one or more of the available responsible gaming features during 2015.
Responsible gaming features include:
- Self-exclusion
- Cool‐off periods
- Setting deposit limits
- Setting loss limits
- Setting time limits
The overwhelming majority opted for self-exclusion:
- 8,350 used self-exclusion only.
- 1,656 used self-exclusion in conjunction with other RG features.
By contrast, Massachusetts, which has a slightly smaller population (6.8 million compared to New Jersey’s nine million residents), reported just 147 people currently enrolled in the self-exclusion program at the state’s lone casino, Plainridge Park Casino.
That said, Massachusetts’ PlayMyWay pilot program (which allows players to preselect non-binding gambling budgets) has 5,000 registered users.
The evidence seems to indicate that gamblers find it easier to self-exclude online.
Do RG features change betting patterns?
Another interesting aspect Rutgers examined was whether the use of RG features had an impact on betting habits and patterns.

According to the report:
“Player patterns indicate that gamblers choosing RG features bet more frequently but wagered less than those who did not use RG features. The data reported that players in this group had highly variable wagering patterns that bear more study.”
Rutgers separated RG users into three different groups:
- Group 1 players opted to set the RG features before play, presumably as a harm-reduction strategy.
- Group 2 set the RG features only after gambling, then ceased gambling altogether.
- Group 3 gambled before and after selecting the RG feature.
In this regard, the study found:
“For all limits besides cool‐off (deposit, time, loss), those who set limits before playing (Group 1) bet significantly fewer days, placed fewer bets, and wagered less in a year than those who either quit gambling after playing and setting limits (Group 2) or gambled before and after setting limits (Group 3).
In contrast, those who bet before and after setting limits tended to have the highest average wagers and bets, but it is unknown what proportion of those totals occurred before versus after limit setting.”
The researchers concluded that the impact of RG features on playing habits is something that should be explored further.

Considering 14 percent of online gamblers have used responsible gaming features, it’s safe to say they’re having the desired result.
Land-based casinos don’t have anywhere near 14 percent of customers using RG features (not that they offer very many), and no land-based casino has more than eight percent of its customers self-excluding.
Rutgers determined that players who begin by setting limits on their play are the most level-headed.
“The most encouraging findings from this analysis is the apparent efficacy of the limit-setting tools prescribed by the DGE for those players who used them before gambling,” noted the Rutgers researchers. “Those players had the most modest play patterns of any group and averaged lower bet amounts even when placing a higher number of bets.”
The researchers were also happy with the range of responsible gaming features available to players. From setting limits, to cooling-off periods, to self-excluding for a certain period of time, the researchers deemed the features “sufficient to allow individual players to customize combinations of options to suit their play preferences.”
Even though a significant number of online players use RG features, the Center for Gambling Studies says this could still be improved.

“Currently, only 15% of players we analyzed utilized one or more of the features,” the researchers stated. “Improving education, access, consistency, and branding might greatly increase that percentage.”

One of the recommendations they make is for RG policies to be disseminated during the sign-up process and at different times prior to play for existing users.

“Doing so would likely increase the number of players who try various features and would also ensure they are fully informed about the range of options,” the study said. “Based on the data, encouraging limit setting at sign-up should prove to be a useful tool in limiting expenditures to recreational levels.”
